Mr. Lavon Dow Snow, age 80 of Guin, passed away on Thursday October 4, 2018 in the Diversicare Healthcare Center in Winfield. Mr. Snow was preceded in death by his parents Loranze Dow Snow and Icia Lela Paris Snow and a brother Kencil Eric Snow. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Snow, son, Leland Snow (Anita) Snow, daughter, Shoshannah Stephens (Mitch), grandchildren, Alicis Snow Bozeman (Cory), Hannah Snow Reese (Ethan), Landon Snow, Chace Stephens and Zane Stephens and a great granddaughter, Emersyn Bozeman. Burial was held on October 6, 2018 in the West Alabama Memorial Gardens. Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Snow family.
Mrs. Mildred Louise Smith, age 93 of Guin, passed away on Wednesday October 3, 2018 at the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield. Mrs. Smith was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Winfield. She was employed as a cook with Winfield Elementary School system for many years, then retired as a seamstress from Munsingwear in Guin. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher Whitley and Earline Dodson Whitley, her husband Lee Roy Smith, sisters, Mary Ruth England (Leman) and Ruby Hill (Charles), brothers, Louis Whitley (Thelma), Lloyd Whitley (Margaret) and Charles Whitley. She is survived by her son, Dennis Smith (Sarah) of Guin, grandchildren, Nicholas Smith (Becky) of Winfield and Stephen Smith of Columbus, MS, and a sister in law, Napalee Whitley of New Orleans, and host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held on Saturday October 6, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Winfield City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. (service time) on Saturday at the funeral home. Bro. Cameron Jungles and Bro. Venlon Bradford will be the officiating ministers. HULON LEX WEBSTER
Hulon Lex Webster, Ph.D. of Florence, died on October 1, 2018 following a brief illness. He was born in Winfield, Alabama on March 24, 1936, to Sam and Etma Webster, who preceded him in death. On August 19, 1962 he married Virginia Christine White Webster, who preceded him in death in 2014.
Dr. Webster attended Auburn University where he received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees and earned his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 1969 in the field of Crop Science. Dr. Webster devoted his career to agronomy and plant science research for the Eli Lilly Company in Dothan, Alabama, Ames, Iowa, Memphis and Germantown, Tennessee, and Greenfield, Indiana before returning to Winfield, Alabama and eventually relocating to Florence, Alabama to be near his daughter. Dr. Webster found no greater pleasure than working in his yard, fishing with friends and family, and watching Auburn football.
He is survived by a son, Keith Webster of Florence, Alabama, and a daughter, Rachel Webster Hillis and her husband, Jamie Hillis, of Florence. He is also survived by his sister Bonnie Acker of Dothan, Alabama, brothers Donald Webster of Winfield, Alabama and W.B. Webster of Decatur, Alabama.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings Elaine Webster, Lavetta Kull, Jean Ryan and James Webster.
Funeral services for Dr. Webster will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel in Winfield, Alabama. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. (service time) at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Old Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Wayside, Fayette County. Rev. Dr. Andrew Keyse and Rev. Dr. Callie Plunket Brewton will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gift may be made to the St. Francis Fund, Trinity Episcopal Church, 410 N. Pine Street, Florence AL 35630, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Old Union Cemetery Fund.
The family of Dr. Webster wishes to express particular gratitude to the special people at Columbia Cottage, Kindred Hospice, and the 6th floor nurses at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Jean L. Whitehead, age 86 of Winfield, passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Mrs. Whitehead was a member of the Winfield First Baptist Church where she taught 3rd and 4th grade Sunday School class for over 22 years. She was employed with General Motors in Pontiac, MI, Sashabawn Elementary School in Detroit as a librarian, and at Pollard’s Menswear in Winfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordan Soldan and Celista Barber Soldan, brothers, Ray and Don Soldan, a grandson James Whitehead, and a son-in-law, Don Vines. Mrs. Whitehead is survived by her husband of 64 years, Mr. Leon Whitehead, daughters, Theresa Vines of Winfield, and Lanette Thrasher (Bobby) of Columbus MS, sons, David Whitehead (Ellen) of Michigan, and Gerald Whitehead (Annette) of Winfield, 15 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, sisters, Joyce Johnston, Delores Campbell, Ruth Soldan, and Beverly Dewey, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 from the Winfield First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the West Alabama Memorial Gardens in Gu-win. Dr. Paul Murphy will be the officiating minister. The body will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. (service time).
