SFC Christopher Shawn Franks, age 44 of Northport, formerly of Winfield, passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Shawn grew up in Winfield and was a 1990 graduate of Winfield City High School. He joined the National Guard in 1991 and later transferred to the Army Reserves. He was an active and faithful member of Capstone Church in Tuscaloosa. He was employed with 3M from 1993-2004 and with Mercedes Benz from 2004-2017. During his service for his country, Shawn earned many medals, including, but not limited to, The Bronze Star, Army Good Conduct Medal, 2 National Defense Service Medals, Combat Action Badge, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, 3 Army Service Ribbons, Sharpshooter Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar and Expert Marksmanship Badge, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Armed Forces Reserve Medals.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Youngblood Capps; his grandparents, Ray Youngblood and Mary Ruth Pender Youngblood, Eugene Franks and Bessie Chambless Franks; and father in law, Charles Howell. Shawn is survived by his wife of almost 25 years, Luann Howell Franks; his children, Caleb, Seth and Grace Franks; father, Ron (Doris) Franks; brothers, Jason (Nicole) Franks, Matt (Sheila) Franks; mother in law, Ava Jones; and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives, friends and church family.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Capstone Church on University Blvd. in Tuscaloosa. The body will lie in state from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. (service time) on Sunday at the Church. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery on Watermelon Rd. in Northport. Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield is serving the Franks family.

Following a sudden illness Rosa Aline Ward of Winfield, Alabama, passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of UAB Hospital with her husband by her side.
Rosa was born June 21, 1951, in Franklin County to Kemper and Ima Glasgow. The daughter of a high school principal who had high academic expectations for his children, her childhood and most of her adult life revolved around education.
She attended schools in Vernon and Bear Creek. She graduated from Phillips High in 1969. At Phillips, she was active on the annual staff and the cheerleading squad. Rosa attended Northwest Alabama Junior College and transferred to Auburn University where she was awarded a bachelor’s degree in education in 1973. In 1975, she earned a Masters in Education from the University of Alabama.
Rosa taught Business Education classes at Vernon High, Brewer Vocational, Phil Campbell, Phillips, and Hackleburg schools for 25 years. She was a dedicated teacher who believed that a good education was the basis for a useful, independent, and happy life. She strived to enable her students to advance their education and to give them the skills and knowledge to get and keep good jobs. She was usually a senior sponsor and could be seen on many class trips and Junior Senior Banquets. The annuals produced under her sponsorship were meticulously edited and laid out.
In 1992, after a whirlwind 7-year romance, she married Gary. She changed from a city girl to a country girl. She learned to herd, feed, and doctor cattle. She taught Gary to use proper business accounting methods and together they developed Coffee Creek Farm into a successful cattle and timber enterprise. She was proud of the farm being a Treasure Forest and of the recognition for its conservation efforts. She hosted many family get-togethers and card parties at her home.
Rosa was a devoted and dedicated caregiver to her husband during his many illnesses. Together they traveled all over the world, sightseeing, attending bluegrass festivals, Broadway musicals, shopping for antiques, and meeting new people. She especially loved taking grandnieces, Zoe and Natalie, to the Virginia Samford Theater. She loved babysitting, cooking and swimming with Zoe.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Wayne Ward; her brother, Donald (Debbie) Glasgow, Huston, TX; sisters, Ann Glasgow, Russellville, AL and Susie (Terrell) Kirkpatrick, Arab, AL; and good friend, Brenda Boyette. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 from Siloam Baptist Church with burial to follow in the adjoining cemetery. The visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Cindy Atkins Nichols, age 46 of Winfield, in the Pea Ridge Community, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017 at her residence. Cindy was a 1989 graduate of Winfield City High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in 1994, where she received the Nightingale Award. Cindy furthered her education by earning a Master of Science in Nursing from The University of Phoenix in 2004. She was employed by Northwest Medical Center as the Chief Nursing Officer for numerous years.
Cindy was preceded in death by her grandparents Arlie and Betty Hallmark and Donald Atkins and her father in law, W. J. “Jake” Nichols. She is survived by her husband Mark Nichols, a son Lawson Nichols, her parents Wayne and Carolyn Atkins of Winfield, sister Tracie Moore of Winfield, grandmother Kathleen Atkins of Winfield, nieces Holland Moore and Chloe Graham, nephews Dakk and Seth Swinney, great nephew Jate Swinney, great niece Kaylee Swinney, and mother in law Paulette Nichols.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, June 19, 2017 from the Winfield First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm (service time) at the church. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery near Pea Ridge.

Mr. John L. Prescott, age 82 of Winfield, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Arborwoods Health and Rehab in Reform, AL. He ws preceded in death by his parents Dewey and Cebell Newell Prescott, 2 brothers J D and Ralph Prescott, and two sisters, Marie Overton and Charlene Lawrence. Mr. Prescott is survived by a daughter, Brenda (Frank) Fowler, a son Wayne (Diane) Prescott, grandchildren, Dale Prescott, Dawn (Chris) Cagle, Carrie (Keith) Edmonson, Kristy (Darrell) Silas, and Nicholas (Chelsea) Fowler, great grandchildren, Brian Cagle, Gaven Prescott, Bryliegh Prescott, Tanner Nixon, Hayley Nixon, Breanna Cagle, Kendall Edmonson, Grayson Edmonson, Casey Silas, Shelby Silas, Annabelle Fowler, and Grier Fowler, a great grandson, John Asher McMillan, brothers, Eugene Prescott and Robert Prescott, and a special friend, Jewell Sentell. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday June 10, 2017 from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Winfield City Cemetery. Bro. Jeremy Harris will officiate.
