John Paul Nolen, age 79, of Winfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. He leaves behind a legacy of music, faith, and quiet grace.

Paul was born an only son on February 7, 1946, in Fayette, Alabama, to the late Gertrude (Newman) Nolen and the late John Henry Nolen. He graduated salutatorian from Kennedy High School in 1964. He was married for 46 years to his love, Barbara, who lovingly and tenaciously took care of him until the very end.

Paul’s life was a gift of music to others. For over 50 years, as the owner of a piano studio, he provided for his family while teaching countless people how to play. He was immeasurably proud of his students, and many of them continue to pay that tribute forward today as teachers and musicians themselves. Paul also shared his talent as a pianist for churches, quartets, funerals, and weddings —his legacy of music was his greatest gift to his corner of the world.

He was a gentle, protective, and cherished husband, father, and friend. Simply put, he was the best. He lived his faith quietly and clearly for 73 years, ever since accepting Christ at the age of six. A selfless person and a genuine peacemaker, Paul always looked for the good in others and was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. He was beloved by so many in his community, and his life was a true example of grace. He had a great sense of humor and was cracking jokes all the way to the end. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

He found the peace he longed for. May his memory always be a blessing.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Nolen, and his only son, Carl Nolen and husband, Daniel Shapiro, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
