Mr. Velta Ray Jones, age 76 of Winfield passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 in the UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Ray was born on January 20, 1945 to Bill and Bertha Jones. He was a member of the Zion Missionary Baptist Church and attended Winfield City High School. Mr. Jones was owner/ operator of CJ Trucking. Ray drove for several trucking companies over the years, including Phifer Wire Products and Tru-Blu Trucking.

Mr. Jones is survived by his son, Wayne Jones of Winfield, granddaughters, Josie Porter (Jeremy) of Winfield and Shelby Pellegrino of Gulf Shores, great grandchildren, Layla, Olivia and Jasper Porter, brothers, Gary Jones (Alice) and Harold Jones, nieces, nephews and other church family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Jones and his parents, William Anderson “Bill” Jones and Bertha Hosch Jones

A graveside service for Ray will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 12:00 noon from the Zion Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Louis Bertrand Hanks, Sr., age 96, of Winfield, Alabama, passed away November 23, 2021. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Louis was a member of Winfield First Baptist Church where he was a deacon emeritus and served the church in many capacities. A World War II veteran, Louis was a Sargent T3 in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the Philippine Campaign.
Born and raised in Jefferson County, Alabama, near Birmingham, Mr. Hanks was one of the founders of Continental Conveyor established in Winfield in 1959. Louis held the position of Chief Engineer and later served as the Vice President of Continental Western-a subsidiary of Continental Conveyor in Sherman, Texas. A jack-of-all-trades with an adventurous spirit, Louis excelled in a vast array of skills and activities including leadership, construction, scouting, fishing, international travel, gardening, and tinkering with his tractor.
Louis and his wife, Margaret, celebrated 78 years of marriage. They were bonded together in a special way from the age of 16 when they were teenage sweethearts until the age of 96 taking care of each other as best they could. Always inseparable partners, Margaret and Louis loved each other deeply.
Growing up during the Great Depression and serving in World War II, forged in Louis a can-do spirit and confidence that served him well during his life. He leaves a legacy of exceptional love for his family, church, and country and he exemplified a life devoted to faith in Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Grace Hanks; sister, Flora Sargent; brother, Virgil Hanks; daughter, Gail Patterson; and son, Gary Hanks.
Mr. Hanks is surviving by his wife, Margaret Hanks; sons, Thomas Hanks, Louis Hanks and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Hanks; grandchildren—Stacey Sullivan, Jack Sullivan (Michelle), Amy Watford (Brad), TJ Hanks, Mandy Peterson (Matt), Jonathan Hanks (Jamie), Andrew Hanks (Courtney); and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service for Mr. Hanks will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 12:00 noon from the Winfield First Baptist Church. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon (service time). Rev. Paul Murphy will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Winfield First Baptist Church building fund.

Rubye Jean Langston Miles age 91, of Winfield passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 in the Heritage Healthcare Center in Tuscaloosa.

Mrs. Miles was born in Winfield on April 21, 1930 to Earnest and Willie Goolsby Langston.  A lifelong member of Old Union Primitive Baptist Church; she was always willing to serve her church in any way until her failing health would not allow.  Rubye was the office manager of Goolsby Insurance Agency/Winfield Insurance Agency for over 38 years.  She was a long-time member of the Modern Literary Club, the Winfield Main Street Program, and volunteered for many years at the Carraway Northwest Medical Center Gift Shop in Winfield.

Mrs. Miles is survived by her son, Bryce Keith Miles Jr. (Barbara), daughter, Linda Phifer (Tyler), grandsons, Joe Phifer III (Amy), and Russell Miles Phifer (Amanda), great grandchildren, Joe Phifer IV, Mary Raynor Phifer, Russell Miles Phifer Jr., and Ella Ann Phifer, and a half-brother, Gary Langston.

Mrs. Miles was preceded in death by her husband, Bryce K. Miles, parents, Earnest Clety Langston and Willie Goolsby Langston, sisters, Erdean McDonald and Voncille Petree, and a half-brother, Marvin Langston.

Graveside services for Mrs. Miles will be held on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. from the Old Union Cemetery near Wayside/  In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to: First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, 900 Greensboro Avenue Tuscaloosa AL 35401 and West Alabama Food Bank, P.O. 805 Northport Al 35476.

Mrs. Glenda Faye Tidwell Long age 74 of Eldridge, passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Long was born on January 20, 1947 to Andrew and Louise Jones Tidwell in Eldridge, AL. She was an active member of the Eldridge Church of Christ, working with the Ladies Bible Class, a Sunday School Teacher and Vacation Bible School. She was a 1964 graduate of Wildwood High School in Ocala, FL and retired from Wal-Mart. Glenda was a loving mother, grandmother and friend.

Mrs. Long is survived by her children, Jamie Long (Jessica) of Eldridge, Sabrena Long Handley (Mike) of Guin, grandchildren, Drew Long (Mallory) of Eldridge, Allie Sims (Kyle) of Hamilton, Jacob Handley of Haleyville, Austin Handley of Huntsville, brothers, Bobby Tidwell (Ruth Ann) of Smithville, MS, and Philip W. Tidwell of Guin and a sisters-in-law, Patsy Tucker of Eldridge and Gypsy Tidwell and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, U. L. Long, parents, Andrew and Louise Tidwell and a brother, Roy Tidwell.

Funeral services for Mrs. Long will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. from the Eldridge Church of Christ with burial to follow in the Kelley Cemetery. The visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. service time at the church.
