Mrs. Myrtle Belle Mixon, age 99, (four days shy of her 100th birthday) of Guin, in the Twin community, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2018 at the Country Place Assisted Living Center in Winfield. Mrs. Mixon was a member of the Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church for 83 years. Myrtle moved north to work at a young age, she was employed with the Kellogg Company in Battle Creek MI for over 23 years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She always enjoyed cooking meals and spending that special time with her famly. Mrs. Mixon was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Lillie Westbrooks Shirey, her husband of 67 years, Robert L. Mixon, a son, Robert Wayne “Jack” Mixon, siblings, Sue Henson, Dorothy Franks, Iva Lee Crow, Earlene Erwin, Earnest Shirey, Raymond Shirey, Doyle Shirey, and Wyman Shirey. She is survived by her grandchildren, Derek (Michelle) Mixon of Grand Rapids, Michigan, their children, Derek Mixon Jr. and Jordan Mixon, a daughter in law, Connie Mixon, and her children, Stacy (Andrew) Schweitzer, and their children Rowan and Jack Schweitzer all of Battle Creek, Michigan, granddaughter, Kirsten (Scott) Waltrip and their son Liam Waltrip all of Battle Creek, Michigan, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, February 25, 2018 from the Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. James Thomas Tyra, better known as Thomas, age 80 of Winfield, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2019 in the Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham. Mr. Tyra was born May 9, 1938 to William, Sr. and Eva Mae Files Tyra. Thomas was a 1957 graduate of Fayette County Training School, and a member of the Piney Grove Church of Christ. Thomas worked for Carraway Hospital in Winfield and retired after 25 years of service. He then worked with Alabama Power, a Southern Company, and retired after 30 years of serving the Winfield and surrounding areas. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Elizabeth Dill, sister, Julia Patton and a brother, William Tyra, Jr. He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Jane Rozzell Tyra of Winfield, three daughters, Cynthia Tyra of Winfield, Karen Tyra-Suhar (David) of Winfield and Carolyn Rogers (Floyd) of Madison, AL, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, a sister, Shelvy Coprich of CA, and host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services for Mr. Tyra will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2019 from the Winfield Church of Christ with burial to follow in the Piney Grove Church of Christ cemetery near Bazemore. Floyd Rodgers will be the officiating minister. The visitation will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (service time), at Winfield Church of Christ. Miss JoAnn Tyra, age 58, of Winfield, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Diversicare Health care facility in Winfield. Miss Tyra was preceded in death by her parents, Siveler and Mable Thomas Tyra, three brothers, Thomas H. ”TH”, Roy Lee and Jimmy Thomas Tyra. JoAnn is survived by her children, Tyrone White and Tiffany Johnson both of CA, her sisters, Betty Wallace of Guin, Wimbreth Tyra and Mary Tyra of CA, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Miss Tyra will be held on Thursday February 21, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home chapel, with burial to follow in the McCollum Family Cemetery near Bazemore. Mrs. Ida Lee Aldridge, age 91 of Brilliant, passed away Saturday February 16, 2019 at the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield.
Mrs. Aldridge was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant Freewill Baptist Church in Brilliant. She was born January 24, 1928 to William Walter and Tura Elliott Westbrooks. She was married to the love of her life Mr. Ambers Aldridge, Jr for 58 years, during that time they raised two daughters, Beth Hawkins (Terry) of Brilliant and Ann Comforter (Rocky) of Port St. Joe, FL. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Robert Hawkins (Jason and Jake Atkins) of Jasper, Nick Comforter (Heather) of DeBarry, FL, and Julia Chrencik (Russ) of Winter Park, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers, G. S. (Buster), Raymond, Milbert, Hilbert, Odie, Clint, and Willard, sisters, Verlia, Rena, Lucinda, Stella, and Letha, and a special niece, Florene.
Funeral services for Mrs. Aldridge will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2019 from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow in the Brilliant Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 am (service time) on Monday at the funeral home. Terry May will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Freewill Baptist cemetery fund at the Citizens Bank of Winfield, or to the Brilliant Memorial Gardens cemetery fund in care of the Brilliant Lions Club, in memory of Mrs. Aldridge.
