Mrs. May Ruth Thatenhurst, age 89, of Winfield passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022 in the Diversicare Nursing Facility. Mrs. Thatenhurst was born on February 20, 1933 in Winfield, AL to Leech and Lilly Burleson Wood. She was a graduate of Winfield City High School and spent much of her adult life living in Birmingham. Mrs. Thatenhurst attended church in Tarrant, AL and spent much of her life employed with Walls and All, and Smith Brothers Honda as a receptionist. She enjoyed taking care of her son, helping friends and neighbors in her spare time, spending time with family, and reminiscing over old family photos.

Mrs. Thatenhurst is survived by nieces, Kathy Mills, Belinda Meritt (Mike), Ann Wood, and Juanita Rosinger (Kenny), and nephews, Kevin Sizemore, Keith Sizemore, Michael Mills, Marty Wood, Bruce Wood (Christine), Gary Ross, Jeff Smith, and Eddy Wilson.

Mrs. Thatenhurst was preceded in death by her son, David Thatenhurst, her parents, brothers, Kenneth, Sherman, and Junior Wood, and nephew, Kenneth Sizemore

Mrs. Tena Jane Pollard, age 76, of Brilliant passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at her residence. Mrs. Pollard was born on April 25, 1946 in Winfield, AL to Alfred and Pearl Smith Henderson. Mrs. Pollard was a 1964 graduate of Winfield City High School and spent much of her life as a homemaker and caring for her family. In her spare time Tena enjoyed reading, playing cards, going to thrift shops, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Pollard is survived by her son, Anthony “Chip” Pollard (Donna), daughters, Melissa Tucker, Anita Gable (Phillip), and Kelly Pollard, grandchildren, Jessica Tucker (Matthew McDaniel), Blake Young, Jacie Cummings, and Macy Cummings, great-grandchildren, Emma Brooke Randolph, Mason Tucker, and Madalyn Young, brother, Tommy Henderson (Diane), and sisters, Bobbie Shaffer, and Linda Williams.

Mrs. Pollard was preceded in death by her husband Larry Pollard, and her parents, William Alfred Henderson, and Geneva Pearl Smith Henderson.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pollard will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Clarence Ray Atkinson, age 95 of the Wayside Community, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at his residence. Mr. Atkinson was born in Fayette County, Alabama in the Sandy Hollow Community on April 24, 1927 to Bascome Poole and Donnie Edwards Atkinson.

Mr. Atkinson was a member of the Winfield Freewill Baptist Church, American Legion #100, Fraternal Order of Police, and Winfield Masonic Lodge #304. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in World War II and in the Korean War. Clarence was stationed in Germany during WWII and was assigned guard duty of top Nazi officials at the Nuremberg Trials. During the Korean conflict, he was wounded in combat and there honorably discharged. Mr. Atkinson served in law enforcement as a police officer for over 38 years; serving in Winfield, Sheffield, Fayette, and finally for the city of Guin as Police Chief for 14 years and until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially quail hunting with his buddy, Preston Lyons.

Mr. Atkinson is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Mary Ruth Atkinson, his son, Byron Atkinson and his wife Shirley, grandchildren, Nathan Atkinson (Kathy), Emily Sexton (Keith) and Josh Atkinson (Susan), great grandchildren, Whit Sexton and Jackson Sexton, sister -in-law, Norma Atkinson and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Nellie Reese and her husband David, Margie Humber her husband Elton, Jantis Atkinson and his wife Vernie, Samuel Atkinson and his wife Snow, and B. P. Atkinson.

Funeral services for Mr. Atkinson will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Old Union Cemetery with Military Honors being presented at the graveside. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Atkinson was well known and loved by so many friends and relatives; he will be sorely missed.

 

Mrs. Judy Lynne Wellberg, age 78 of Winfield, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022 in the Grandview Medical Center. A memorial service for Mrs. Wellberg will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. from the Eastside Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. service time at the church.
