Mrs. Flora Margaret Cox Hanks, age 97, of Winfield, Alabama, passed away on June 20, 2022 in the Northwest Regional Medical Center of Winfield. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Margaret was a member of Winfield First Baptist Church. She was very active in the church and served in many capacities including as a Sunday School teacher.

One of eight children of parents, Samuel and Mary Cox, Margaret was born at home in 1925, in Decatur, Alabama. Margaret’s family eventually moved to Cahaba Heights, a suburb of Birmingham, traveling by covered wagon.

Mrs. Hanks was a homemaker who raised four children while also volunteering in community service including president of the Winfield PTA and on the parks and recreation board. Margaret expressed an adventurous spirit and enjoyed many activities including gardening, hosting get-togethers, international travel, playing bridge, making holiday creations, and antiquing. However, her most enjoyable pastime was fishing on the bank of a lake with her rod and reel and purple worm.

Louis and Margaret celebrated 78 years of marriage. They were bonded together in a special way from the age of 16 when they were teenage sweethearts. Always inseparable partners, Margaret and Louis loved each other deeply.

Mrs. Hanks was preceded in death by her husband, Louis B. Hanks, daughter, Gail Patterson, son, Gary Hanks, parents, Samuel and Mary Cox; five brothers and two sisters; and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Hanks. She is surviving are her sons, Louis Hanks, IV and Thomas Hanks; seven grandchildren—Stacey Sullivan, Jack Sullivan (Michelle), Amy Watford (Brad), TJ Hanks, Mandy Peterson (Matt), Jonathan Hanks (Jamie), Andrew Hanks (Courtney), and fourteen great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service for Mrs. Hanks will be held on Friday, June 24, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. from the Winfield First Baptist Church. Dr. Paul Murphy will be the officiating minister. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Winfield First Baptist Church building fund, P. O. Box 237 Winfield, AL in memory of Mrs. Hanks.
