Ms. Norma Jo Haney Smith, age 89, of Hoover formerly of Guin passed away on January 10, 2024 at her residence. Ms. Smith was born in Winfield, Alabama on June 18, 1934 to Obie and Pauline Reese Haney. Norma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Guin. She attended Kirklin Elementary School and Winfield High School where she graduated in 1953.Soon after taking her first job in Tuscaloosa, she met her husband James Smith, to whom she was married 59 years. Being the wife of an enlisted U.S. Air Force Sargeant, her travels took her from the rolling hills of Alabama to living all over the southeast and ultimately to the sands of the Arabian deserts in Saudi Arabia. Norma exemplified strength and unwavering dedication to her family and country. She raised 4 children through numerous deployments, having to move as often as the government required. She lived a life committed to duty. Norma always loved to travel with her family and made many memories that will last a lifetime for those who she leaves behind. Norma can be described as one who lived her life exemplifying the fruits of the spirit. She will be greatly missed by her family but as believers we do not mourn as those who don’t know Jesus. We Look forward to seeing her again, healed and in the arms of Jesus.

Ms. Smith is survived by her children, Ron Smith (Mary), Gail Shockley (Andy), Cyndy Mabry (James), and Nancy Weart (Honey and Emma), grandchildren, Erin Flurry (Jason), Keith Shockley, Patrick Mabry (Lisa), Quinton Shockley (Marilyn), Leigh Ann Flynn (Alex), Sarah Davis (Artis Lee), Ethan Weart (Felice Minor), great grandchildren, Jaxon Flurry, Hannah Flurry, Eleanor Flynn, and Jemma Mabry, sister, Kathern Mayo (Mickey), sister-in-law, Rita Haney, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Smith, and her brother, Daniel Rex Haney.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to special caregivers Winnie and Lillian for all the wonderful care that was given to their mother.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 2 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with a graveside service to follow in the West Alabama Memorial Gardens in Gu-Win. The visitation will be held on Saturday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. service time at the funeral home.
