Obituaries

Tommy Lawrence

Mr. Thomas Anthony "Tommy" Lawrence, age 71 of Briliant, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at The Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Norma Lee Mills Lawrence, and a sister, Lavonne Lawrence.  Tommy was a graduate of Brilliant High School and Shelton State Barber School.  He is survived by his wife, Linda Chesnut Lawrence of Brilliant, a daughter, Tanya Lawrence Booth (Jeremy) of Winfield, a son, Wesley Lawrence (Anna) of Bear Creek, grandchildren, Braxton Lawrence, and Ansley Booth, step grandchildren, Zack and Aiden Booth, a brother, Don Lawrence (Lana) of Brilliant, a neice, Donna Tucker of Winfield, and a host of other relatives and many friends.   Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014 from the Brilliant Church of Christ with burial to follow in Brilliant Memorial Gardens.  Greg Lowery and Keith McNeely will officiate. Tommy will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. (service time)on Wednesday.  Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Lawrence family. 

Mrs. Willie Dean Mays

Mrs. Willie Dean Mays, age 87 of Winfield, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014 at Rose Manor Health Care Center in Haleyville.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Audrey Mays, Sr., her parents, James Newton Green and Mary Abigail Harris Green, 3 sisters, Winnie Green, Mattie Lee Couch, & Mary Alice Westbrooks, and 2 brothers, James and Charles Green.  Mrs. Mays was a graduate of Winfield City High School;  a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother   She enjoyed being active in community activities, civic clubs, and taking care of the family business.  She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Norris (Arnold) of Winfield, a son, James A. Mays, Jr. (June) of Winfield, grandchildren, Cynthia N. Leathers (Wade) of Winfield, Jill N. Peterson (David) of Littleton, CO, Steven Norris (Melanie) of Winfield, James A. Mays, III "Jamey" (Tabatha) of Winfield, Jared Mays (Amanda) of Winfield, and Jonathan Mays of Winfield,  great grandchildren, Abigail and Anthony Leathers, Seth Peterson, Caleb and Cole Norris, Tyler and Breck Mays, and Tripp and Drake Mays, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014 from Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Winfield City Cemetery.  Dr. Charles Ballew and Dr. Paul Murphy officiating.  Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. (service time) on Thursday at the funeral home.  Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Mays' Family. 

Mr. D. Ott Corkren

 

Mr. Dewey Ott Corkren, age 71 of Brilliant, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper.  Ott was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey Lexton & Oda F. Ashmore Corkren and one infant son.  He is survived by his wife Nora Barnett Corkren, daughter, Janet (Kevin) Todd,  sons,  Dewayne (Sharon) Corkren, Terry Corkren, Scott (Julianna) Tittle, Mark Tittle and  Joey Murphy, 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way and 1 great great grandchild on the way.   Brothers, Wilburn and Pete Corkren, sister, Dorothy Corkren Osburn, aunt, Catherine Shirley and a special caregiver, Candie “Mother Hen” Linley.   Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in Goldmine Cemetery with Military Honors presented at the grave side.   Jerry Self and Greg Lowery officiating.  Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Corkren family. 

Jill Earnest Gilbert

Mrs. Laura Jill Earnest Gilbert, age 53 of Brookwood, formerly of Winfield, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014 at DCH regional medical center in Tuscaloosa.  Jill was preceded in death by her father, Tommy Earnest.  Jill was a 1979 graduate of Winfield City High School.  She is survived by two sons, Nicholas Gilbert and Patrick Gilbert of Brookwood, her mother Pat Earnest of Winfield, and 2 brothers, Steve (Barbie) Earnest of Myrtle Beach, SC and Scot (Jessica) Earnest of Winfield.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, at Bowen Funeral Home Chapel.  The Family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 (service time) on Sunday at the funeral home.  Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving Jill's family.  

Mr. James C."Jim" Mattox Jr

Mr. James C. Mattox Jr., better known as "Jim", age 84 of Pensacola FL, fomerly of Guin, AL, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2014 in Pensacola.  Mr. Mattox was raised in Guin, AL, attended the University of North Alabama, and Samford University School of Pharmacy.  He was a  United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict. Mr. Mattox worked for Pfeiffers's Drugs in Pensacola from 1957 until his retirement in 1993, and continued part time employment for some time after. Mr. Mattox was an avid golfer, taking every available opportunity to play, he enjoyed boating, fishing, and loved spending time with his family. Mr. Mattox was preceded in death by his parents, James C. Sr. and Lillian Bigler Mattox, 2 brothers, Charles and Robert Mattox, and a sister, Helen Mattox Hall.  He is survived by his wife, Dortha Dean Dillard Mattox, children, Emily Mattox McGiboney, (John) of Birmingham, Mitzi Mattox Childs, (Rick) of Fairhope, and Rebecca Mattox Gwarjanski, of Birmingham, grandchildren, Lane McGiboney (Robbie), Sarah Childs, Daniel Childs, Jacob Gwarjanski, and Jordan Gwarjanski, great grandchildren, Ellen and Mason McGiboney.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 from Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Winfield City Cemetery. Miliatary Honors will be presented at the graveside.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. (service time) on Tuesday at the funeral home.  In Lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Covenant Hospice, 6479 Caroline St. Suite B, Milton, FL 32570.   A memorial service will be held Saturday August 30, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. from Perdido Bay UMC on Innerarity Rd.
