Obituaries

Bill Oliver

Mr. William Thomas "Bill" Oliver, age 72 of Winfield, passed away on Tuesday, February 25th at his residence.  Mr. Oliver was a U.S. Navy Veteran and Fleet Marine, proudly serving his country in Okinawa, California, Illinois, and other stations during his military time.  He was employed with 3M company in Guin for 29 years and 9 months.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Rome Ernest and Marie Stanphill Oliver and his grandparents, Jesse and Victoria Oliver.  Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara Spencer Oliver of Winfield, a daughter, Vikki (Dale) Dodd, a son, David (Angie) Oliver, and his grandchildren, John Dodd, Will Dodd, Ashley Oliver and Julie Oliver, all of Winfield.  Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Winfield City Cemetery.  Bro. Silas Oliver will officiate.   The family will recieve friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. (service time) on Thursday at the funeral home.   Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Oliver family.

Jack Smith

Mr. Jack Wayland Smith, age 73 of Winfield, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at St. VIncent's Medical Center in Birmingham.  Jack retired from Fruit of the Loom company after many years of dedicated service.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Alice Verner Smith, and a brother, Billy Joe Smith.  He is survived by his wife Melba Smith, daughters, Mikki Smith Miles, Kim Norris (Kevin), and Leigh Smith, all of Winfield, a son Kyle Smith of Winfield, brother, Edmond Wayne Smith (Carolyn) of Anniston, a sister in law, Stella Smith of Breman GA, grandchildren, Zane, Dakary, and Braden Miles, Kelby and Kamron Smith, and Alayna Norris, great grandchildren, Milleigh Anna Miles, Hutch Miles, and Hank Miles.  Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, at West Alabama Memorial Gardens in Gu-Win.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Service time on Sunday at the Funeral Home.   Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Smith Family. 

Don Franklin

Mr. Donald Ralph Franklin, age 81 of Winfield, fomerly of Huntsville, passed away on February 9, 2014 at Kindred Healthcare in Huntsville.  Mr. Franklin was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and served in the Army reserve for over 30 years.  He was preceded in death by hisparents Clifton and Leo Walker Franklin, a granddaughter, Linley Wilborn, sisters, Olivia Sharp, Earlene Semerow, Ethel Sebring, Willene Flippo and Faye Baxter, 2 brothers, Carl and Carol Eugene Franklin, and stepchildren, Donnie Pollard and Patricia McInnis.  he is survived by his wife, Bettie Franklin, daughters, Dulcie Franklin Westbrook, Donna Franklin Porter, and Debbie F. Wilborn (Tommy) all of Huntsville, granddaughter, Tracy, Karen, Kim and Kellen, great grandsons, Cristian, Brody and Kai, great granddaughter, Anna'Lin, stepdaughter, Annette Glass of Winfield, 4 Step Grandchildren, and  11 step great grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am on Wednesday, Feb. 12, (weather permitting) from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Brilliant Memorial Gardens with military honors presented at the graveside.   Tom Moye officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Franklin family.

Annell Nelson Spiller

Mrs. Annell Nelson Spiller, age 87 of Guin, in the Pea Ridge community, passed away on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at Sunset Healthcare facility in Guin.  Mrs. Spiller was born on January 21, 1927, the daughter of the late Arthur and Lillian Myers Nelson and was the wife of the late Versie Spiller.  Mrs. Spiller was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers H.B. Nelson and Clyde Nelson, two sisters Hazel Nelson and Willie Kimbrell.  She is survived by her children, three sons, Bryan (Sharon) Spiller, Ronnie (Judy) Spiller, Barry (Joyce) Spiller, all of Guin and one daughter, Lana (Don) Lawrence of Brilliant, nine grandchildren, Leann Spiller of Guin, Donna (Mike) Tucker of Brilliant, Lisa (Jerry)Porter or Winfield, Kim (Stoney) Huguley of Sheffield, Kellie (Scott) York, Jason (Carla) Spiller, Gina(Shane)Webb, Stacy (Amy)Spiller and Paige(Daniel) Riggs all of Guin.  Sixteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren, four sisters, Estelle Stricklin of Birmingham, Donna Doss of Brilliant, Flora Reynolds of Decatur and Carolyn Spiller of Pleasant Grove, AL,  two brothers Bob Nelson and Wayne Nelson both of Guin.  Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, from the Center United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in the adjoining cemetery. Bro. Bryan Spiller and Bro. Hollie Wayne Spiller will officiate. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 pm (Service time) on Sunday at the Church.  Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield directing.

Lavern D. Norris

Mrs. Lavern Dodd Norris, age 72 of Jasper, fomerly of the Oak Grove Community, passed away on Thursday, Fevruary 6, 2014 at DCH Medical Center in Tuuscaloosa. Mrs. Norris was a 1959 graduate of Brilliant High School and a longtime member of Oak Grove Church of Christ until recently joining with 6th Ave. CHurch of Christ in Jasper. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Annie Tittle Dodd, a grandson, Aaron Neuman, sisters, Cozette Farris, Janell Ellis, JAckie Mobley, Jean Redman, Millie McDonald, , Jeanette Furgeson, and brothers, Randle Dodd and Norman Dodd.  Mrs. Norris is survived by her husband Troy Norris,  two daughters, Linda Norris Junkin (Paul) of Jasper, and Loretta Ann Norris of Jasper, grandchildren, Kayla Thomas (Ken) Zachary Neuman, and Carson Junkin, all of Jasper, great grandson, Brantley Thomas of Jasper, sisters, Lois Elkins and Carol Cagle, brothers, Ernest Dodd and Benny Dodd, and several neices, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, Feb. 10 from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the OAk Grove Cemetery.  Vance Hutton and Levi Sides will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm on Sunday at the funeral home Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield directing.
